Age of Wonderland. Project by Jose Montealegre and Griet Menschaert

The project The Pryson Tryptich #1 articulates the outsider as a subject of study in order to understand and reflect upon the evolution of isolating the unwanted, either in prison systems or in other situations of isolation, or in outsider camps located outside of the community.

Eindhoven based artist Griet Menschaert and Honduras born José Montealegre accidently met on the streets of Eindhoven in March and decided to collaborate.  Montealegre's curiosity was triggered when he heard that The Netherlands were actually closing prisons and turning them into hotels or spaces for asylum seekers. During Age of Wonderland, they will travel back and forth between the fringe and the center, collecting images, stories and interventions on outsider culture. The artist’s main focus is to find the parameters of this new reality, and how it reflects upon systems of exclusion and the position of the outcast.

José Montealegre is an artist based in Mangua (Nicaragua) and member of the initiative Venti3, a group of artists who work with a focus on interactivity and social issues. Veinti3 often focusses on projects that look at history and histories, mainly of people who have beem affected in their daily lives by global developments and who have little opportunities to express themselves due to political and commercial reasons.

This project is an initiative by Baltan Laboratories and Hivos, developed as part of Age of Wonderland for the Dutch Design Week 2014. Visit our website for more info on this program.
