Misinformation? AI-fabricated content? In the world full of news, comments, stories, reels…, how can we be sure that we know what is real and what is not?

Join our Fabricating Realities workshop and learn how to debunk fake content. The workshop is an opportunity for you to experiment with using AI to generate (fake) content, learn about the tactics used to make the fake look real and how to spot the glitches that can sell the fake content out. You will be guided by Laurens Vreekamp, journalist, writer, design thinker and very experienced trainer in the field of AI in journalism and design.

Fabricating Realities is part of the European CERV (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Value) project, fAIr Media. The main objective of fAIr Media is to debunk mis/disinformation, promote media literacy and enhance citizens' capacity and critical approach to media (incl. social media) through an active and participatory methodology involving AI, media professionals, artists, and young citizens.

The workshop will begin with short exercises to create AI-generated content with commonly used AI software. By making this content and playing with these tools, specific aesthetics, common AI mistakes and glitches will help to spot the fabricated content.

Next, Laurens will present different famous cases of fake news created with generative AI, to understand the contexts they came from, which the audiences they influenced and how. The participants will be asked to create a story/news item using one of the images created in the previous phase, adjusting it to a specific context and audience.

Finally, in the last phase, the participants will combine the previous phases’ experiences to develop a series of tactics that could help identify AI-fabricated content through image, text and audience/context analysis.
